Double Self-Portrait (2022)

An 18 x 24" Prismacolor colored pencil drawing that depicts the tumultuous feeling one experiences when fighting for belonging. The jagged lines represent mountains, as well as climbing tension. The strong presence of red and yellow, alluding to the New Mexican flag, contrasts with the purple and blue of sadness and the feeling of being misplaced.

The process of creating this work required more introspection than I had initially thought, but I am thankful for the meditative understanding it brought me. Throughout creating it, I explored how it feels to live as a New Mexican studying in Ohio, missing the heritage I took for granted back home.
